Week 13 Story: Rash Behavior, Dire Outcome

Rash Behavior. Dire Outcome

A man in love is often blinded, whether it is by love itself or other emotions such as passion, jealousy, lust etc. Point is, men often react with their first emotion, typically offering little time for evaluation.

A man in, what he thought, a committed relationship, made his way home from a long day at work. Upon entering his home he noticed his girlfriend's laptop sitting on the kitchen table open to a string of emails. Having called out for his love and received no response, the man peered at the screen for any indication of her whereabouts.  His eyes narrow on the name of another man and widened with anger at the site of times and locations being shared in order to meet up. He noticed the date decided on was one week away. Having seen enough the man bent the laptop beyond its ability, snapping it without a second thought. While the laptop laid useless on the floor, the man sat and brooded over his humiliation.

The words on the screen burned into his brain, unable to escape their taunting significance.  Suddenly, he heard a door close. He stood up, slamming his fists into the table, and yelled to the woman who seemed to have been home. She appeared in the kitchen's doorway, wet with towels wrapping her body and hair. The man exploded with fury, blaming the woman for her infidelities. Shaken, but angry, the women quickly explained to the man that she had set an appointment with a party planner for her boyfriend, whom she deeply loved, would be celebrating his 35th birthday in only three weeks.

Now even more humiliated, the man presented his girlfriend with her newly destroyed laptop.

Authors note:
I chose to write my final story of the semester on "A Trusty Dog and his Master". The story dealt with a master, finding a mess with blood and the dog covered in it. The master assumed that the dog had killed the baby that was in the manger nearby, and killed the dog as a result. Come to find that the dog actually saved the babies life by killing the snake that tried to attack it, which was found next to the baby dead and bleeding. The quote at the end of the story is taken from the original. The simplicity of the story was attractive, but the main purpose in choosing this story is its ability to apply to far more situations than life and death. I personally fall victim to reacting quickly with my emotions, often resenting it after the initial shock wears off. Not only did this story deal with the dangers of making rash decisions, but it also provided a good example of how there are always two sides to every story. Both concepts go hand in hand, further proving the importance of reacting calmly without clouding judgment.

  1. Hey Brooke! I liked the simplicity of the story and how easy it was to follow. I can't imagine how angry the man must've been when he found that email at first, the paranoia must've really hit him hard. I wonder how she would react to the destroyed laptop, I would think that would cause her to really get angry and consider leaving if she was upset enough about his lack of trust. Great job adapting the story and great story overall!

  2. Hey Brooke!
This was a great story and I am so glad I got to read it! One thing that could be cool if you add this to your portfolio would be to develop the character a little more. Maybe give them names and a little backstory. I like that your story is simple but I think the reader would be more invested if there was more context to the relationship.
