Week 2 Story: Horrific Rescue

Image
Horrific Rescue There were once three sisters living on the outskirts of town: Laurabelle, Annabelle and Emmabelle. The sisters could not differ more regardless of their shared identical DNA as they are triplets.  Their mother, Gabrielle, was preparing for her weekly visit to the town in order to secure supplies for the coming week. Due to the absence of their missing father, all responsibilities were now up to the girl's mother. Gabrielle asked the girls, mainly Annabelle and Emmabelle, if the had any special requests. The girls quickly listed of all their desires as they pushed their mother out of the door.  As the mother began her venture to town, the girls remained home to finish the chores. Nonetheless, it was only Laurabell who would typically be cleaning as the other sisters wasted their breath on insults and gossip.  Emmabelle and Annabelle have dealt with their father missing far worse than Laurabelle. Both believe Laurabelle is to blame as she was the las

Feedback Thoughts

Image
Rejection Receiving feedback has always been a tense situation for me personally. Sometimes I get quite defensive when I let someone read my work and offer their opinions, which sounds silly as I was the one who asked for help in the first place. This has been an issue for me for as long as I can remember, and I think it stems from my older brothers unwaverig ability to nitpick everything I did during adolescence. Nonetheless, the expiration on blaming older brother has passed, so its become my own issue. It is no wonder that  Why It's So Hard to Hear Negative Feedback  was one of the first articles I  explored, as I have asked myself this question many times. The article explained that our physical reactions to negative feedback have been heightened due to our inability to give AND receive feedback. When we know that we are about to receive bad feedback our bodies react to the situation, causes us to now fully digest the valuable information that was shared with us. Per

Topic Brainstorm

https://www.walldevil.com/artwork-mermaids-pirates-of-the-caribbean-on-stranger-tides-redheads-ships-syrena-women-wallpaper-22504/ While reading the expansive list that consists of project topics, the diverse range of subjects inspires a general theme that I wish to focus on. The project ideas fall into these four categories:  Fairy Tale Princesses ,  Mermaids ,  Women Pirates  and  The Land of Oz . My decision to focus on either Mermaids or Women Pirates stems from the idea of combining forces between the two. As I previously mentioned in my blog, I have always been an admirer of mermaids. It began with my love for Disney's The Little Mermaid and grew with my fascination with their stories dark origin. With that being said, their origin lies with pirates lost at sea, fantasizing about a woman that could put an end to their loneliness. So, I think it would be interesting to create a crossover between mermaids and women pirates by combining their powers. I believe that using

Reading Notes: The Tiger, The Brahman, and the Jackal

Indian Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs with illustrations by John D. Batten (1912). The Tiger, The Brahman, and the Jackal Reading Notes: Begins with the tiger trapped, luring the poor passing Brahman  Tricks Brahman into opening the cage Brahman seems ignorant  Uses beautiful imagery when describing the interaction  The tiger tricks the Brahman into trusting him to then be uncaged  A deal is made, introducing the other characters: the pipal-tree, the buffalo, the road  All three showed no pity for the man as they had all been taken advantage by humans prior All characters thus far do not favor humans   meaning the tiger has had no objections in eating the Brahman Brahman's despair heightens  The Jackal introduces himself while presenting himself as dimwitted The Jackal uses frustration to draw the tiger and the Brahman closer Both the Brahman and the Jackal refer to the tiger as "My Lord"  Both bottom of the human and animal totem pole  Continu

Reading Options

Image
https://orintercollegiatejournal.com/2016/02/26/an-archeology-of-books/ The list of stories within the UnTextbook is vast, and upon first glance quite intimidating. However, as I weeded through the options I discovered the general genre in which I am interested in for the rest of the semester. I was surprised by the amount of foreign influence found within the UnTextbook, as classes within this University typically stay within the native American realm.  Nonetheless, I branched out in my interests, but not by much. First I chose  Tejas Legends  as a subject of interest, mostly due to my heritage as I am a 7th generation Texan. It tells stories of its rich history that include both its natural history and its history of Native American influence. I have always had such an interest in history, so I feel that this genre was a good mix of business and pleasure. Now that I found my history fix within the course, I wanted to focus a little bit on the classics found within  Hans Chris

Time Strategies

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Time-is-precious-Use-it-Wisely-Decor-vinyl-wall-decal-quote-sticker-Inspiration-On-Wall-Decal/1114651592.html I have typically never had an issue when it comes to managing my time for an online course as not meeting a deadline truly gives me enough anxiety to motivate me. In addition to this class, I have two other online courses that I am enrolled in, so I have copious amounts of spare time during my weeks. During this first week, I have realized that it will be difficult making sure that nothing falls through the cracks. To avoid this, I have always used a planner to write down all that I have to do within a week. When looking at the suggested articles to read, my eyes quickly found " The Psychology of Checklists ". The reason for my planner is to physically comprise all of my responsibilities to then later cross them off for the purpose of pure reassurance. The article explained that the little feeling of reassurance is actually d

Growth Mindset

Image
While I have never heard of Carol Dweck, I wish I had prior to this course. There seems to be a commonly misconceived notion that asking for help is like admitting failure. Personally, when I was younger I had a hard time excelling in classes due to the muted state I entered into as I got to class. I never wanted to ask a question during a lesson because then everyone me would know that I hadn't been following along, thus making me fall further behind.  It's also hard to challenge yourself due to the fear of a failed outcome, which causes us to hunker into our comfort zones. Carol Dweck sparked new ideas meant to grow one's mindset for the purpose of excelling. I for one need to push myself to find a hobby. My goal for the summer was to find a hobby for myself so that I will stop using mindless activities to pass the time. Nonetheless, I was not able to figure out a hobby of mine because I ended up being busier than expected, but that will not stop me from finding

Impersonally Personal Introduction

Image
Trying to describe yourself online without sounding braggy, impersonal or uninteresting is a task. At least from my perspective. It's hard to know what to share without sharing too much or too little because to capture someone's true nature you need to actually encounter them. Nonetheless, maybe we are just getting better at communicating digitally rather than personally. So, with that being said, where to start... My name is Brooke Holloway, I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and am currently a senior studying Public Relations. I wasn't really raised to be a Sooner like a few of my classmates, and shortly after people find out I go to OU they question my loyalty to Texas. As if the two really have anything in common? I was as a raised a Longhorn fan, primarily for convenience, but ended up at the University of South Carolina my freshman year. I loved South Carolina and the people that made it a home, but no matter how settled I became I could not shake the feelin

Balancing Technology

Image
Balancing Technology After reading about the technology involved in this class the words "spoke too soon" ran through my mind. In my last blog post, I explained that I felt nervous about making sure that I would not let an assignment fall through the cracks, which stemmed from being overwhelmed with the multiple websites involved in finishing one homework assignment. However, now that I take a step back I understand that I balance a wild amount of social apps, so why would I think that would not translate into an academic setting? Also, it is laid out plain and simple how I am expected to balance each sites interaction. An added bonus of this course: Being additionally enrolled Public Relations Publications will help in working on creating a website and using photo skills as I will be working with Adobe Photoshop for a large portion of that class. Although this course does not directly translate into my career in public relations, the skills I earn undoubtedly will.

Assignments

Image
Throughout my college career I have taken a fair share of online courses, however, this one seems different from my courses. I have yet to encounter a professor that does not enforce reading each half of a reading assignment in addition to telling us that we can make up for unfinished assignments with extra credit. There are many possibilities to make up work, so I wonder if the idea of missing an opportunity will add stress. I have found that in my previous online classes that I tend to overly worry about missing an assignment and letting it fall through the cracks. So, seeing the large sum of Sunday assignments due on the Canvas Calendar is intimidating.  Regardless of the amount of work, I am eager to see what my final project will become and what stories will inspire me the most. I enjoyed looking over the storybook titles as a majority of them involved clever twists in classic storylines. Being a public relations major I have yet to explore my creative writing abilities, which

Storybook Favorites

Image
There is a time in each child's life when the facade of storybooks is shattered by the introduction of the stories true origins. Suddenly darkness overshadows each story's outlandish perfectness and we begin to see the true twisted nature of our creative ancestors. More specifically, my intrigue with mermaids began when I was a young girl. Upon learning about the sailor's tale version of mermaids my intrigue only deepened as I began to understand that not all fairy tales need to be polished. The idea of a mythical world being created for the purpose of adult entertainment seems like more of a bridging point for children to enter adulthood without ignorance. It shows how not everything is not as it seems the older we get. With that being said, I noticed multiple mermaid tails and I look forward to seeing the development of what once was only " The Little Mermaid " to me. In "Mermaids: The Eternal World of Water" mermaids were described as mysterio

My Favorite Place

Image
Nantucket, Massachusetts has been a summertime hiatus for my family since my dad started his annual visits in 1974. Honestly, I would not describe it as my favorite, but I will say that I have developed a special connection with the island that keeps me coming back. The fresh air that kisses you the moment you step foot off the plane, the natural conservation of Nantucket’s profound beauty and the nearly perfectly preserved 18th-century whaling mecca. I was lucky enough to begin my career here this past summer as a Public Relations intern, which has been a childhood dream of mine. No matter where I find myself in the world, I know that Nantucket will always pull me back to its beautiful shores. Nantucket Island
